What Is YouTube TV?

YouTube TV is a streaming service launched by YouTube in 2017. It offers subscribers access to many popular broadcast and cable channels and focuses on live and on-demand viewing.

Although the service started out at an affordable $35 a month, prices have risen in the years since its launch. YouTube TV is definitely more expensive now, but depending on what you pay for cable or satellite TV, YouTube TV may be more affordable.

YouTube TV Pricing

As mentioned earlier, YouTube TV charged just $35 per month when it was launched. However, like all things, prices have risen. You can choose from a few different plans and add-ons with YouTube TV. Here’s a breakdown of the plans, add-ons, and their respective prices.

Plan Price Features Included
Base Plan $72.99/month – 100 live channels
– Unlimited cloud DVR space
Spanish Plan $34.99/month – 30 Spanish networks
– Unlimited cloud DVR space
NFL Sunday Ticket Plan $349/year – Access to every out-of-market Sunday game
– Does not require a 2-year contract

Base Plan

YouTube TV’s base plan is priced (as of this writing) at $72.99 per month. The base plan includes over 100 live channels and unlimited cloud DVR space.

You’ll also get some additional features, such as additional customizable household accounts with this plan. And up to three users can stream at once.

Spanish Plan

YouTube TV’s Spanish plan is priced (as of this writing) at $34.99 per month. This plan comes with over 30 Spanish networks and unlimited cloud DVR space.

As with the Base plan, the Spanish plan comes with additional customizable household accounts, other features, and the ability for up to three users to stream at once.

NFL Sunday Ticket Plan

The NFL Sunday Ticket plan can be purchased as a standalone product or in conjunction with your YouTube TV subscription. You’ll get a discount if you purchase it with your YouTube TV subscription.

The NFL Sunday Ticket plan gives you access to every out-of-market Sunday game unavailable in your local broadcast area.

You’ll pay (as of this writing) $349 per year to add NFL Sunday Ticket to your YouTube TV subscription. You can watch NFL Sunday Ticket on unlimited streams at home and up to two streams out of the house.

Subscription fees for NFL Sunday Ticket can be paid for all at once or in 4 monthly installments.

YouTube TV Add-Ons

You can also purchase add-ons with your YouTube TV subscription and your NFL Sunday Ticket plan. With NFL Sunday Ticket, you can get NFL Red Zone for an extra $40 per year. NFL Red Zone is an add-on that gives you whip-around coverage of every Sunday game.

Other premium channel add-ons run $15 a month on average when added to your YouTube Basic plan:

  • HBO
  • Max
  • Cinemax
  • Showtime
  • Shudder
  • MLB TV
  • Starz

See the YouTube TV webpage for a full list of premium channel add-ons and pricing.

YouTube TV Trials and Discounts

YouTube TV and add-ons such as NFL Sunday Ticket often run discount promotions. For example, as of this writing, you can get $20 off per month of YouTube TV for the first three months.

You can also get $50 off of the annual NFL Sunday Ticket plan price, with or without YouTube TV. However, these promotional prices change often, so watch the YouTube TV website for details.

Note that promotions rotate and vary, so the above-mentioned discount may not be available when you read this review.

YouTube TV offers a 5-day free trial or a 20-minute free preview trial as well. After your 5-day free trial expires, you’ll be charged the regular price of $72.99 per month for YouTube TV, plus any prices for add-ons that you choose.

Trial promotions will vary just as price promotions do, so keep your eyes open for special offers for YouTube TV trial offers.

Cancellation Policy

You can cancel your YouTube TV subscription anytime, with no penalties. That being said, YouTube will not refund you for a partial month if you cancel your YouTube TV subscription mid-month.

NFL Sunday Ticket and NFL Red Zone packages are non-refundable once purchased.

Cloud DVR

As mentioned elsewhere in this review, YouTube TV comes with unlimited, separate cloud DVR storage for all of the household accounts you utilize with your subscription.

Note that recordings are kept for nine months, at which point they are deleted from the user’s cloud storage space. You can stream your DVR-stored shows from anywhere in the U.S. with available internet.

Required Equipment

You must have compatible equipment to stream YouTube TV, but the list of devices is long. You can use YouTube TV with any of the following devices:

Gaming Consoles Smart TVs Streaming Devices
PlayStation 4 Vizio SmartCast TVs (select models) Android TV (not available on some Android mobile devices)
Playstation 4 Samsung Smart TVs (2017+) Apple TV (4th gen. & 4k)
Xbox Series X Roku TVs (all models) Chromecast with Google TV
Xbox Series S LG Smart TVs (2016+) Fire TV Stick (Lite, 2nd gen, 3rd gen, 4k)
Xbox One X Hisense Smart TVs (select models) Fire TV Cube & Fire TV Cube 1st gen
Xbox One S Fire Edition TV Smart TVs (select producers) Google TV
Xbox One Tivo Stream 4K
Xfinity Flex devices
Roku (most devices)

Household Sharing

A YouTube TV subscription comes with the ability to have six separate household accounts at no extra charge.

Similar to how Netflix works, each of the six household accounts will have its own login. YouTube TV also grants each account its own personalized recommendations and its own unlimited cloud DVD storage account.

Note that even though you are entitled to share your subscription with up to five additional family members or roommates besides yourself, the Basic plan only allows for three people to stream at one time.

However, there is an add-on called 4k that allows you to watch on as many compatible streaming devices at a time as you want. The 4k add-on costs (as of this writing) $9.99 per month.

Multiview

Multiview is a feature that will allow you to watch up to four shows or games simultaneously on one screen. It’s a great feature that will appeal to sports fans who don’t want to miss any of the action.

The feature allows you to switch between audio tracks as you’re watching easily. You’ll see a white border around the show that you have audio for.

And you can switch back to just one screen, two or three at any time. You can also manage and view a watch history for multiview.

There is no extra cost to take advantage of the multiview feature.

YouTube TV Pros and Cons

Here are some YouTube TV pros and cons you may want to consider as you ponder whether or not to use the streaming service.

Pros

  • Ability to add a live sports package
  • Stream away from home on up to two devices.
  • Up to six household accounts
  • Unlimited DVR cloud storage
  • Multiview screen capabilities

Cons

  • Costs are similar to traditional cable or satellite TV
  • DVR has limited features

Likely the biggest “con” is the high price. Paying anywhere between $73 to $150 or more per month (depending on add-ons) might be unaffordable for many households and doesn’t offer much savings over cable or satellite TV.

That being said, YouTube TV’s biggest attraction is the multiple features it offers standard plan users, from multiview to unlimited DVR storage.

YouTube TV Alternatives

Here are a few YouTube TV alternatives that you might want to check out as you’re deciding which streaming service is best for you.
